Travelogue: Farewell to South Island

Travelogue: Farewell to South Island

by Johnny Isaak ·

Farewell to the South Island. Standing on deck at the stern of the ferry, I cast a few fleeting glances to the south as the ship enters Cook Strait steaming toward Wellington. One chapter ends, and another begins.

Oriental Bay in Wellingon Harbor at night.

The sun is setting. The ferry will make the passage under the cover of night. I will ride into Wellington in the dark. There something special about entering a city for the first time and it late at night.

The South Island falls into the distance under a setting sun.

My time in New Zealand is passing quickly. It’s time for a changer of scenery, a different perspective, and point of view. A sense of urgency drives me to ride north to new horizons. Much still remains to be seen. A non-traditional route I must take. It’s off the tourist trade routes that the “real” New Zealand lies.

The Hutt River at twilight.

New adventures lay ahead. There are white sandy beaches and turquoise waters, I have yet to see through the lens of my Sony camera. See you out there. Cheers.
