Life is an open road. You can go pretty much anywhere you want. It’s really up to you. It was a day riding solo while enjoying the quiet and solitude of a beautiful day on New Zealand’s Coast to Coast Trail on the North Island.
Initially halted by an unexpected road closure backed up by an unyielding road construction crew, a barricade had forced me off of the Russell Highway and on to this sweet little cycling track, which would become a section of the Coast to Coast cycling trail. Originally what appeared to be an annoying detour turned out to be an impromptu adventure tracing along an old railroad line.
A morning on a busy two-lane highway from Russell to Whangarei suddenly transformed into was a stimulating foray filled with nothing but sunshine and blue skies above, while grinding my way through thick clumps of mangrove trees. Crisp morning air in the pockets of trees gradually warmed as the sun climbed in the sky. The path, like much of New Zealand, held nothing but dramatic eye-pleasing scenery all the way. The only sound to be heard was gravel crunching under my tires, as I plied the juicy section of trail before me. There I was, off exploring the unknown. It was the perfect place to be.
Embrace the unexpected. Often, it’s the unforeseen detour that will reward you with a unique, lasting experience you hadn’t planned. Sally forth. Adventure, it’s out there for those willing to give it a go. How about you?
See you out there. Cheers.
