Travelogue: Fire in the Sky

Travelogue: Fire in the Sky

by Johnny Isaak ·

Up before the dawn, getting ready to go. The house is quiet, my family sleeps. Rising in the darkness to hit the road early. Down a cup of hot coffee and dress in warm clothes. Out the door and up the street to meet the day.

Laboring over the pedals, generating speed. Off the road and onto a dirt path. Frost coated gravel crunching under my wheels. Crisp autumn air biting my cheeks and stinging in my throat.

I looked up and turned my head toward the east. Fire in the sky, glowing orange, and yellow, a burning ember. Camera in hand, I straddle the bike and make a picture, capture the moment. Nevada sunrises are among the best I’ve seen.

Ride to Za Pu: Adventure by the Sea

Ride to Za Pu: Adventure by the Sea

by Johnny Isaak ·

The great thing about China is an adventure is always near. As the longest continuous civilization on the face of the earth, there is always someplace to go, something to see. It was time to let the spirit run and see what there was to see. Destination: the coastal fishing village of Za Pu in Zhejiang province on the north shore of Hangzhou Bay.

After kissing my wife and daughter on the cheek, I pedaled my bike out the compound gate and down the street in a southerly direction. Gradually the concrete, steel, and glass of Shanghai fell away behind me. Traffic congestion easied and the riding became more relaxed. I considered the importance of time, our most precious resource. When the opportunity presents itself, ride.

Coffee Outside: If You Brew It, They Will Come

Coffee Outside: If You Brew It, They Will Come

I’ve spent a lifetime traveling the world and perhaps more than taking in the beautiful exotic landscapes, I love to meet the people. Experiences and interaction with genuine locals are one of the greatest rewards travel has to offer and I relish the most.

Want to meet people? Just start brewing a cup of handcrafted espresso or Turkish coffee on a park bench or along the edge of a flower bed in a village square, and soon a steady stream of people will gravitate to you for about as long as you care to hang around and talk to them. Most locals are naturally curious of foreigners and have an intrinsic desire to see what you are up to, especially in China. And what better way to break the ice with your new acquaintances than over a cup of Joe?

San Francisco Microadventure: Over the Hills and to the Sea

San Francisco Microadventure: Over the Hills and to the Sea

Yours truly at the Golden Gate park.

Enriching life altering journeys don’t always have to be to some far away land or exotic destination. Adventure is where you find it, and more often than not, it’s more about one’s mindset than the places traveled to or the length of time on the road. Quite often, excitement and adventure can be found in your own backyard or near your home.

Microadventures are excellent journeys in themselves in lieu of or in between bigger farther, longer lasting voyages, and provide not only enriching experiences for relatively little time and capital, but can be ideal proving grounds for testing out new gear or refining one’s touring techniques prior to embarking on bigger forays farther afield.
