Access to my smartphone while on and off the bike is vital. With map and GPS apps, I keep myself found and on the right track. I’m able to check any messages from family and friends, and can jot down any notes or thoughts I may have.
So, having my smartphone mounted on the handlebars where it’s handy and not stuffed in a pouch, where I might have to fumble through to check a map or answer a phone call, is essential to my riding style.
Many mounting options exist, of which I’ve had several, but by far, the best for me is the Quad Lock.
An Essential Piece of Riding Kit
Since I own an iPhone, my comments will focus on it in combination with the Quad Lock case. Quad-Lock makes cases for the Galaxy and a universal case as well, which I assume functions the same.
My set up consists of Quad Lock’s Out Front Bike Mount mounted on a Jone’s Loop H-Bar, which ideally positions the iPhone for easy access and view. Additionally, the location tucks the phone away to protect it from bumps and strikes from the front or sides should the bike get tipped over or laid down on its side.
I’ve used the Quad Lock for the past couple of years with the iPhone 6 Max, the 7 Max, the Xs Max, and now, the 11 Pro Max, with the only downside is that I had to upgrade the Quad Lock case every time Apple updated its phones due to the changing camera lens placements.
A Functional, Secure Mount
The Quad Lock’s locking mechanism between the mount and the case provides a positive, secure mount. The phone doesn’t vibrate or flop around. It’s a clean setup, unlike other bulky and clunky looking mounts.
The mount positions the iPhone for easy viewing in both the upright and aero riding positions. The case attaches and detaches quickly with an eighth of a turn by pressing a blue lever on the mount. It’s a simple, straightforward setup.
The Quad Lock microfiber-lined polycarbonate case provides edge-to-edge impact protection and isn’t too clunky or bulky off the bike. The case allows charging while mounted, so I can keep the iPhone topped off via a SON dynamo, solar panel, or power pack while riding.
Except for the universal case, Quad Lock cases are built specifically for each type of smartphone to ensure a proper fit. As mentioned, the only downside is you have to upgrade the case when a new model of phone comes out. I guess that’s just the nature of the beast, if you’re into having the latest smartphone.
Rain Protection
Quad Lock offers an optional rain cover, which works great in light rain. When the heavier stuff starts falling, I keep the moisture out with a Ziploc bag and a rubber band just to be sure.
Sun Protection
Mounting the iPhone on the handlebars exposes the phone to the sun and effects of UV rays. On clear, bright sunny days, the sun can and will overheat and possibly damage the phone. Unfortunately, Quad Lock doesn’t offer a protective sun shield. So, I’ve fabricated a reflective sleeve from a car windshield cover. It reflects the sunlight and keeps the phone cool while mounted. I can quickly pull it off when I want to access the phone. The reflective sleeve isn’t necessary on overcast or cooler days.
A Solid, Durable Mount Worth a Look
The Quad Lock provides a solid, stable mount for your smartphone. If you’re in the market for a phone mount, the Quad Lock is worth a look.
